MacDonald, Joan Catherine passed away peacefully at Twin Lakes Terrace on Saturday May 8, 2021, exactly one week before her 96th birthday. Her loving husband of 64 years, Michael Alexander MacDonald, predeceased Joan. Loving mother of Mike MacDonald (Elizabeth Holmes) Brian MacDonald. Grandmother of Tyler MacDonald (Kelly), Jeff MacDonald (Margarita), Samantha Castley MacDonald (Anna), Rachel MacDonald (Chris) and Brett MacDonald. Great Grandmother to Elizabeth, Katherine and Luka. Joan, the third of eight sisters, was much loved by a legion of nieces and nephews. Joan was born and raised in Annan Ontario on "The Irish Block", the daughter of Maurice and Loretta Traynor nee Feehan. Joan is survived by her sisters Celestine Manning and Bernadette Catalano. She was predeceased by her sisters Patricia Sheppard, Rosemary St Pierre, Theresa Friedmann, Maura Harris and Gloria Baker.

Joan was a teacher in Sarnia for over 40 years, coached many winning St. Helen's track and field teams and taught art classes. She encountered many past students that told her she was their "favorite teacher". This always brought a smile of satisfaction to her face. She was also active in the Catholic Church and the Catholic Women's League. In their retirement, Joan and Mike visited Long Term Care facilities to support and socialise with residents. Joan is presently enjoying a cold beer with Mike while basking in the light of God's love.

Special thanks to the caregivers at Twin Lakes Terrace who work tirelessly to meet the needs of their residents.

If you would like to commemorate Joan, please donate some time to the care of the elderly. A smile and a friendly word go a long way to make someone's day.

There will be a small private family service at Our Lady of Mercy cemetery at a future date. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilpin Funeral Chapel, 123 King Street East in Forest. Please leave a memory or condolence online at

We were sad to hear that Cousin Joan has passed and we offer our sincere condolences. We have many fond memories of the “Traynor girls” visiting the Irish Block. We recall the one time that Joan and Mike visited us at the Traynor Homestead and Mike’s hearty appreciation for apple pie! What a great couple they were and now they are together again! It is never easy losing a parent, sibling, grandparent or loved one even though they have lived a good life. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Hugs sent your way - Mike and Jerrie ``

I remember all the visits to Sarnia in the summer, both as full family visits and when the boys would swap roles on paper routes in Kitchener and Sarnia. Aunt Joan always made you feel like you were her favourite nephew and it was very special that you were visiting. Of course we knew that we were just a chore and she had to hope that we stayed out of trouble, which was very hard with the influence of Brian. Great visits and memories of summer with Aunt Joan and Uncle Mike.

Happy Heavenly Birthday Joan.
I hope you are celebrating with our sisters and the rest of your family and friends.
I remember the first time you brought Mike home to the Irish Block to get the approval from Mom and Pop. You got it. I thought Wow you’re really lucked out finding someone so handsome.
I have many good memories of my time spent at your home enjoying your great hospitality. Your good food, BBQ’s, and relaxing while sipping on one or two cold beers. If l remember it right you had a limit of 2 and you stuck to it. I didn’t necessarily follow you on that.
It was great just watching your 2 sons Michael and Brian run wild in the back yard. They called me “Freckles “ , not aunt Bern which was just fine with me.
Now I will try to keep all these GREAT memories.
Miss you Joan. Think Good Thoughts.
