It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, John "Murray" Mackey on July 23, 2020, in his 97th year.

Murray spent his life farming with his beloved wife Gladys (1994) they worked honest days while raising their family of Rita & Stuart, Lois & Paul, and Ralph & Lori.

Murray was the proud grandfather of Alexandra & Ken, Melora & Matt, Cameron, and Michelle & Bryce.
Murray is predeceased by his parents, Dawson & Grace Mackey, sister Hazel (Bill) Craig, and grandson Neil Bray.

Murray retired from farming at the age of 91 after enjoying a lifetime of adventures and stories involving life as a dairy and cash crop farmer, as well as a horseman, raising, training, and racing his Standardbred horses in London, Windsor, Toronto, Quebec, and New York. Murray was someone full of energy and always on the go, he loved baseball and even continued to play for the Sylvan Team well into his 40's.

The family would like to acknowledge the unwavering, loving care given by his long term PSW care through St. Elizabeth Health Care, and Dr. Thorpe.

Due to Covid-19, a private graveside service will take place with Rev. Jim Haupt officiating. Donations are appreciated in Murray's name to the LHSC University Hospital Emergency Department.

Arrangements are entrusted to M.Box & Son Funeral Home, 183 Broad Street in Parkhill. Please leave a memory or condolence online at

We were sorry to hear of Murray's passing. I remember him from 65+ years ago when he helped Mom & Dad with the harvest. One year Mom had to bake over 100 pies. The men really loved their pies. I have fond memories of his laugh. He was a wonderful man. Sorry for your loss. Frank & Eleanor Sadler

Murray and Gladys were two of the first people I came to know and respect at the Sylvan United Church. I enjoyed my visit with him this past winter. My sincere sympathy to all his family. Jan Sharpe

I remember watching Murray play ball while growing up in Sylvan - he was my favorite. We would talk at the yearly cemetery service and share a few laughs - will never forget that laugh! He was a really, really nice man.
Marilyn and I send our sincere condolences to the entire Mackey family.
