Helen Joyce Wilson

Peacefully on March 18, 2020, Helen Joyce Wilson nee Yorke, passed away at the age of 100. Helen was born on October 14th, 1919, in Warwick Township, to Dennis and Augusta Yorke. She graduated from London Teachers’ College (London Normal School) in 1940. Helen married Frederick Wilson in 1944 and they served together in teaching and ministry in Bolivia, Brantford, Burch, Alvinston, Brooke-Enniskillen, Bothwell, and Clachan, before relocating to the Arkona area in 1973.

Cherished mother to Dennis (Jen) Wilson, John (Diane) Wilson, Beth (Ian) Lambie, Nial (Deb) Wilson and Marie (Ross) Teeple. Also remembered by Sharon Wilson. Beloved grandmother and great-grandmother to Mindy (Keith), Kent (Tara), Kyle (Lauren), Chris (Erica), Jenny (Scott), Cara (Stemon), Matthew (Chantel), Dara (Choo Yeung), David (Courtney), Krista (Arnault), Rhéa (Andrew), Eli, Luke (Emily), Hannah (Sean), Joline (Luke), Jordan (Tess), Amber, Ava, Clark, Bronte, Stella, Molly, Max, Mabel, Bennet, Evan, Patrick, Joyce, Oscar and Arthur.

Also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Predeceased by her husband, Fred (1984), her parents, Dennis (1939) and Augusta (1987), two sisters Hazel (1972) and Irene (1984), and two infant brothers George Gilles and Dennis Keith.

Helen lived her life loving her God, her family, and all those around her. She looked for joy and shared kindness. She lived the last four decades of her life in the home that her grandmother purchased the year that Helen was born. In this house, “Grandma’s old house,” Helen loved visiting around her kitchen table and sharing her roast beef Sunday dinners with her children and grandchildren. In her nineties, she continued to be surrounded by faithful friends who took her to church, to Bible study, to coffee hour, and to her writers’ group. Helen was also thankful for her wonderful healthcare providers who cared for her at home until May of 2019 and for those who continued that wonderful care at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital and the Watford Quality Care Centre.

She remained interested in the lives of so many and cherished her special visits with family and friends throughout the years. Her life was immeasurably enriched by the love and hugs of the precious little ones in her life and she continually encouraged them and her entire family. She will be greatly missed.

A private interment service will take place at the Arkona Cemetery on Sunday, March 22, 2020. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Arkona Baptist Church, Yonge Street Mission, and the Watford Quality Care Centre.

Arrangements are entrusted to Gilpin Funeral Chapel, 123 King Street E., in Forest. 519-786-4964 Please share a memory or condolence online at

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Helen. She was a wonderful lady. Helen was a distant relation on my mother's side, Doris (Holbrook) Stacey. Helen helped me via email to sift through old genealogy records and many many memories of the Arkona area history. I know she will be dearly missed, as family was everything to her. Goodbye Helen. I know you are in Heaven. Jean Burns

I was blessed to know Helen, Fred, Gussy, and to have met the entire family. I worked as recreation manager at Chateau Gardens for many years and was always inspired by this loving family of faith. Fred and Helen served the Lord in ministry for many years, then following a stroke, Fred was admitted our nursing home, still in the prime of life, while still raising the family. Gussy was in her 90's when admitted as she just needed more care. Helen and Fred's unwavering faith in God gave them the strength to move forward, and to celebrate countless milestones as a family, graduations, weddings, and births. Helen was a powerful witness to our staff and residents. I praise God that I knew her. And I sorrow with you as a family, for she is a great loss to all who knew her,
but such a great victory for the Lord.
