Obituary

Richard Glenn Barker - January 29, 1952 – February 23, 2020.

Peacefully, with family by his side, it is with much sadness that we announce Richard’s passing at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Sarnia, Ontario on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the age of 68 after a short battle with cancer. Richard was the cherished son of Russell (1988) and Anne (1994) Barker, and the much-loved brother of Russell (2006) and sister-in-law Krisanne (2011) Barker. He was dearly loved and will be remembered by his sisters Judie (Rick) Havers and Kelly Barker, of London, Ontario, and by his brother Barry (Tanya) Barker of Sarnia. He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, Matthew (Andrea) Barker, Chris (Jenn) Havers, Leslie Havers, Russell (Meghan) Barker, Josh Barker, Sarah Barker, Emily Doran and Jeremy Doran.

Richard was born in Sudbury, Ontario and moved with his family in his teens to Kitchener where he spent much of his life. As a free-spirited young man, Richard didn’t settle in one place for long and had many adventures. He spent most of his later years working in St. Thomas where he will be remembered for his love of football and his management of the football pool at a local sports bar. Richard suffered a stroke in June, 2014 and moved to Sarnia to be close to his brother, Barry and Tanya, who cared for him through his recovery and beyond. After his stroke, Richard was able to live on his own and maintain as much independence as was possible which was very important to him.

Cremation has taken place. As per Richard’s wish, there will be no funeral or memorial service. He will be buried in the Spring at Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener with his father, Russell George Barker, in a private family service.

The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Sarnia for their compassionate care during Richard’s final days. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Richard’s memory is asked to consider St. Joseph’s Hospice, 475 Christina Street North, Sarnia, Ontario. N7T 5W3
