Obituary

Sweet sister, Barbara Ann Bloch-Gower, went to frost wild thing cakes and chargrill organic vegetables and bake cherry oatmeal cookies for a more universal audience, May 11, 2019. Born to Alf and Doreen Bloch, June 6, 1957, Barb's life was an artful dinner party filled with the friends and family she loved and fed with a fervor rarely matched in a kitchen, where appetizers were a bounty, soups silken, "entree" meant enter and behold three main courses and desserts towered heavenward. Her generosity and love kept scores of people -- otherwise a random, sometimes clashing collection of spices -- together for decades in her great recipe for life. Barb is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years, Lonnie, brother Jim, sister-in-law Pattie, sister-in-law to Terry & Luanne Gower, mother-in-law Judy, and a quartet of now mournful cats, Bob Dylan the Bug, Lulu, Jethro, and Buttercup.

Barbara loved life and spent hers learning, mentoring others and giving generously of herself. She enjoyed sharing her many natural talents. Barbara’s passion for fine food meant providing excellence, no matter what obstacles were faced - and those were many in the catering and food industry. Running multiple businesses, serving food for thirty-five plus years, provided Barbara with much joy, but her true motivation was giving everyone who worked with her or with whom she worked for, the best part of herself and making their experiences special. The legacy she gave in her ‘made from scratch’ philosophy lives on in all those she touched.

Those fortunate enough to have had Barbara as a friend, you know how lucky were. In keeping with Barbara’s wishes, there is no formal celebration of life. Her desire was for you to spend time with your loved ones, enjoy yourselves and the memories you have of her.

Barb was a presence and a personality that could fill a room. She was legendary and wherever you knew Barbara from, be it her initial years in Michigan, the health food store in Grand Bend, the pizza shop, bakery, deli, ice cream, her cakes, or perhaps your wedding or a Christmas dinner she made….know she loved, giving her best to everything she did. Barbara will be sadly missed by all her friends and by all who knew her.

Arrangements are entrusted to Gilpin Funeral Chapel. Please leave a memory or condolence online at www.GilpinFuneralChapel.com

It’s been one week since we lost Barbara and I still find myself shaking my head in disbelief. I don’t know how many times I have said, “wow, I can’t believe it! It’s too soon! I want to hear her laugh again”. It was contagious!!. It was unique like her. I always admired her natural creative talents. One which extended far from her culinary expertise! I loved her eye for decorating. The way she could transform a house into a welcoming home filled with “unique eclectic”. meaningful decor. Coupled with the amazing scents filling the air, you felt at home the minute you walked through the doors. I will miss her hug as she greeted you. She always opened her home to her ‘unique eclectic “ circle of friends. Barbara truly was the heart of a unique group of friends who got together and always had a great time !! And likely over ate!! I know I did! R.I.P. my friend. You will be truly missed. Love Josey and Ralph

Barbara had a way of seeing people as they truly are, not how they appear to be. She was accepting of everyone in the different walks of life, and tried to meet them where they were at. She had a very big heart and so it seemed natural that she would be in the kitchen as it is the heart of the home. In her kitchen she taught you how to cook, but she also gave life lessons and stories of her younger years. She impacted my life in such a huge and positive way and I was such a fan girl when it came to Barbara! She was a mentor, culinary hero and friend to me. I am a better person simply for knowing her. Sending love to Lonnie and all those who feel this loss♡

Barbara and I worked together at Sprint in the early '80s. We became fast friends and I will never forget our weekend with our work "family" on Beaver Island. Barbara was such a joy to be around. She touched everyone she met in a special way. I will treasure my memories of her. To Lonnie and her family and friends, I'm so sorry. May she rest In Peace. Sue Trussell

Barbera's spirit and love will certainly remain in my heart. She had such a kindness, a spark, an ability to root for the underdog and make us into the best. She had such firm and consistent expectations of greatness, but without a hint of meanness-a rarity in the kitchen world. It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye in this realm to this mentor and friend. She fed her way into the hearts of so many people. My deepest condolences to Lonnie, her kitties, and to all she touched who feel the loss of Barb. Oxox
