Obituary

Robert Dean Anderson of Thedford passed away peacefully on May 21, 2019, at Sarnia Bluewater Health in his 85th year. Dean was married to the love of his life, Mary Ellen and could not believe this beautiful woman would say yes to spending her life working side by side with him on the family farm and square dancing their years together.

Dean and Mary Ellen raised their family of Debbie Anderson, Dave Anderson, and Glenda (Ken) Baldwin. Dean leaves a legacy in his Grandchildren, Jamie, Jordan, and Josh Baldwin and will be missed by his siblings Paul Anderson and Patsy Schultz as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and family. Dean is predeceased by his mentor father Cuthbert and his much-loved mother Freda Anderson and siblings Shirley Metcalfe and Blake Anderson.

Dean took great pride in farming, counting the livestock in the spring, admiring all 12 of his IH tractors, attending auction sales and enjoying the farm pets. Dean loved nature, watching the hummingbirds, keeping a close track of the rain gauge and admiring the crops in his fields. Nicknamed “Speedy” during his high school days as a track and field runner, later he was always quick to crack a joke or try to put one over on his Grandsons. A favourite past time of Dean's was to head out to Lakeside Grain and Feed where he would enjoy his free coffee and peanuts on a weekly basis.

A visitation will take place at Gilpin Funeral Chapel, 123 King St. E. in Forest on Friday, May 24 from 5pm-8pm. On Saturday, May 25, a service will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church, 182 Main St., in Thedford at 1pm with a visitation taking place 1 hour prior to the service. Donations are appreciated in Dean’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society, Bluewater Palliative Care, or the Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilpin Funeral Chapel. Please leave a memory or condolence online at www.GilpinFuneralChapel.com

I really enjoyed spending time with you Uncle Dean. It was always a happy time with jokes and smiles. I wasn't able to come to the funeral but I hope that I can spend time with your family and talk a lot about you in the near future. I really feel that we didn't get to visit enough while you were among us. This is something I can't change but I can hold on to those good times when we did visit. I have particularly happy memories about when you and Mary Ellen came to our wedding in Scotland. I think everyone would admit you looked good in a kilt. You certainty looked like you were having a great time. Thinking about you and your family.

Lots of Love,
Doug, Elaine, Isla and William

It has been a couple days since my dad's funeral. I have decided to add part of an email I replied to from dear friends of mine who live in PEI. The email contains another story about my dad I wanted to share.

" It has been a long 7 months. Although, he has had prostate cancer for years things started to change last Thanksgiving. His health declined and bladder cancer was diagnosed in January. He was home on the farm until the end of March. I went up to see him as much as possible. He and my mom worked on a jigsaw puzzle which I had brought them. It was a 2000 piece puzzle of the plant earth surrounded by the dark blue universe with tiny white stars. He kept telling me it was the toughest puzzle he had ever worked on. I replied that the 1000 piece puzzles were getting to easy for him. I made sure he helped push the last puzzle piece into place the day they took him into Sarnia hospital. I am only going to concentrate on remembering the good times in the next 4 weeks that followed. I am going to remember the our long talks and cherish every story he told me. I will remember how he comforted me about my kitty cat when I came to the hospital after I had discovered she was paralyzed. He was a good old soul and take comfort that he has final made it to the home farm in heaven.

Dear Mary Ellen and family. The friendships through square dance are so dear to us; we cannot say enough how lucky we are to know you, to share a pastime of dance and good times. We are saddened in the passing of Dean. Sharing stories of farming and family has been our greatest joy. We send our deepest condolences in Dean's passing. God bless each of you. You are loved.

I was saddened to hear for Dean's passing. Dean was a great man that will be missed. I will always remember our visit we had a lakeside and of course him coming in for his coffee and peanuts. Thinking of all of you during this time. May all your memories be locked away in your hearts forever.
